The Strong Beginnings Project
Building the Foundation of a Mission‑Driven Nonprofit From Vision to 501(c)(3)
Strong Beginnings had been operating through its business arm, but the vision by the CEO/President was always bigger.
To grow our impact through the Autism Walk, secure donations, and bridge critical gaps in services, we needed a nonprofit structure. I helped lead the effort to bring the mission to life by transforming her vision into a fully recognized 501(c)(3) with the foundation to expand our mission and reach.
The shift was immediately felt: the annual Autism Walk attendance surged and donor support grew significantly compared to prior years, signaling strong community trust and buy-in.
The Challenge
The CEO/President had the heart, the momentum, and the vision but what was missing from that vision was tax-exempt status, formal governance, and a sustainable fundraising plan.
Scaling would require gaining credibility with donors and being able to serve more families would require doing this right from the ground up.
New 501(c)(3) Nonprofit
Donor Impact in 1st 6 Months
What I Did
- Filed the required paperwork and successfully obtained IRS 501(c)(3) status.
- Drafted the board bylaws and internal operational guidelines to align with nonprofit best practices.
- Built our marketing and fundraising development plan from scratch.
- Created a donation platform using Zeffy, and established systems to track and steward donors.
-
Developed and managed the bookkeeping system, including deposit slip templates and a tracking structure for the treasurer to monitor funds.
- Designed and launched the organization’s first official website, which became the main hub for event info and donor engagement.
- Designed donor-facing assets like step-and-repeat backdrops and branded yard signs to amplify recognition.
- Strategized press releases and promotional efforts that helped our major donors get the visibility they deserved.
How It Impacted
Getting nonprofit status was more than just a paperwork milestone, it was the start of bringing to life our long-term vision for growth. I built a structure that reflects the heart of The Strong Beginnings Project and positions it for meaningful, sustainable impact. Becoming a nonprofit helped us to position ourselves as a force for impact and change.
Why It Mattered
We received our tax-exempt status quickly and smoothly.
Launched our first official donor campaign and raised $11k in the first quarter.
Formalized major donor benefits and elevated their role in the community through thoughtful recognition and visibility.
